How to speak Dominican

Dominican Words by Wordle.net

The official language of the Dominican Republic is Spanish. But the people of this beautiful island in the Caribbean speak the language with a spicy, merengue-tinged, tongue twist. “Dominicanisms” are phrases mixed in with the local jargon and Spanish slang.

Important Phrases:

Hi (“Hola”)
“Saludos” or “Buenas”

How are you? (“Como esta usted?”)
“Como tu ‘ta?”

How much? (“cuanto cuesta?”)
“A como es?” (singular) or “A como son?” (plural)

Vaina – a multi-purpose word that, depending on its use, can mean thing, thingy, some joint, the stuff, thingamabob, thingamajig, junk, etc.
